Goose Green Playground

Client:      Southwark Council
Budget:    £260,000
Date:        Phased from 2007 - 2009
The playground was transformed over 3 phases from a traditional flat tarmac playground to a space full of exciting wooden constructions, mounds and tunnels. The new space was designed to provide drama and height with bespoke towers giving children the experience of being among the trees. A pentagonal timber tower soars into the trees giving the feeling of being able to climb among the branches. Lower shallow nets allow access for younger and less able children. A series of circular mounds was created by recycling the soil from a large dilapidated brick planter. A wide inclusive slide with shallow steps allows easy access for less able children and scramble nets give opportunities for climbing and socialising. The final phase was the goal with viewing platform and an 'amphitheatre' of giant oak vertical logs as a climbing feature. The playground is a community focal point so a pergola with raised beds and picnic tables beneath was provided. The Friends of Goose Green look after the planting. It has now become a destination playground for south east London and featured in The Times described as ‘Indiana Jones meets the Teletubbies.’
